The Impact of Social Media on Media Consumption: Navigating the New Landscape

by | May 6, 2024

In today’s digital age, the rise of social media has revolutionized the way we discover, consume, and engage with media content. From streaming services to viral videos, platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok have become integral parts of our daily lives, shaping the way we interact with entertainment.

At MediaTech Institute (MTI), we recognize the profound impact of social media on media consumption, and we are committed to preparing our creators for success in this rapidly evolving landscape. It’s important that our students understand the changing, new ways of advertising themselves, their brands, and their projects so they can make waves in their chosen industries.

Changing Dynamics of Media Consumption

Social media has fundamentally altered the way audiences discover and consume media content. Only 20 some years ago, we used to hear about upcoming movies in the “Coming Soon” section of our newest VHS tape, or in the newspaper. Now, we hear about it years in advance, with often constant updates on the internet.

People can hype up things they’re excited about, and even get production companies to take a second look at their work by critiquing early released content- like with the 2020 “Sonic” movie, where fans BASHED the creators over the original look of the title character.  In this case, the VFX team was able to redo the design and made a lot of fans very happy- proving the power fans have thanks to social media.

On top of that, we’ve seen a major rise in algorithm-driven recommendation systems and personalized feeds, users are exposed to a diverse array of content tailored to their interests and preferences. From trending topics to viral challenges, social media platforms have become powerful engines for driving engagement and shaping cultural trends. This is also how streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime get shows to go viral- content about the shows are served directly to the people who are most likely to engage and like it!

At MTI, we understand the importance of staying ahead of these trends and teaching our creators how to leverage social media to reach new audiences and promote their work effectively.

Evolution of Distribution Channels:

The advent of social media has also transformed the distribution landscape for music and film. Gone are the days when physical media and traditional broadcast networks dominated the industry. Today, streaming platforms and digital distribution channels reign supreme, offering creators unprecedented opportunities to share their work with global audiences. While some people hold on to their desire for physical media- the majority of consumers no longer feel the need to own their favorite movie, shows, or music on disk.

However, navigating this new landscape requires a deep understanding of digital marketing strategies, audience engagement tactics, and platform-specific best practices. That’s why at MTI, we provide knowledge from our industry expert instructors in distribution strategies, equipping our students with the tools they need to succeed in the digital age.

Implications for Media Producers

For media producers and marketers, the rise of social media presents both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, social media platforms offer unparalleled reach and targeting capabilities, allowing creators to connect with niche audiences and build dedicated fan bases.

On the other hand, the sheer volume of content competing for attention can make it difficult to stand out in a crowded marketplace. At MTI, we teach our students how to craft compelling narratives, create engaging, consistent content, and develop strategic marketing campaigns that cut through the noise and resonate with the target audiences.

MTI’s Preparation for the Changing Creative Industries
