Who doesn’t have memories tied to certain songs? Sound and music is a powerful medium that often “blends into the background”- but in doing so leaves a lasting conscious impression.
MediaTech Institute’s Recording Arts Program goes beyond the basics, immersing students in the art of creating powerful audio that amplifies storytelling in film, podcasts, video games, and more. With a focus in technical mastery, creative sound design, and hands on live sound learning opportunities- MTI equips students to transform narratives through sound.
The Role of Sound in Storytelling
Imagine the dramatic reveal in your favorite movie without the crescendo of sound effects or the thrilling climax of a video game without its orchestral score—it simply wouldn’t be as impactful. Audio is essential to storytelling because it shapes how the audience feels.
A story isn’t just heard; it’s felt through ambient sounds, emotional scores, and carefully placed silences that evoke anticipation and resonance. When thinking of classical music’s great minds, like Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart– you can listen to hours of *just* music and feel movement, emotion, flow, and an auditory story through it all- and there’s not even words to the music. This just goes to show the immense impact of understanding how music composition affects the listener.
In MediaTech Institute’s Recording Arts Program, students learn to wield sound as a narrative tool, with technical training that covers every facet of audio production.
Learning to Craft Immersive Audio Experiences
MTI’s Recording Arts Program provides students with hands-on experience in state-of-the-art studios, working with industry-standard equipment and software. From recording sound effects and dialogue to mixing and mastering final tracks, students gain a comprehensive understanding of the audio production process. You will learn how to create environments with sound—from the bustling background noise in a city scene to the unsettling silence before a big reveal. Each detail contributes to a richer, more immersive story. Would the popular video game “Red Dead Redemption 2” be as popular or as immersive if it weren’t for its CRAZY sound design? Crafting soundscapes is integral to the success of many pieces of popular media today.
Think of what foley artists do for movies and video games- the “Clip Clop” of a horse’s hooves, or the sound of lightsabers colliding. Along with a soundtrack, these sounds create a more immersive world for the audience- and a deep understanding of audio technique is essential to crafting that world.
For instance, the program teaches students how to layer sounds and control audio dynamics, techniques that are crucial in mediums like podcasts or film. Imagine a podcast where listeners are drawn into the world of a professional Dungeons & Dragons campaign—without the right audio cues and background soundscapes, the magical atmosphere will fall flat with words alone. Students at MediaTech Institute learn to use sound to make these experiences authentic, transporting listeners to a world where every footstep, sword clash, and whispered spell comes to life.
One of the unique aspects of MediaTech’s approach is the opportunity for students to collaborate with peers in other programs on their own time. Recording Arts students frequently work with those in Digital Film Production, Animation and Visual Effects, and even the Podcast Workshop. These interdisciplinary extra-curricular opportunities help students understand how sound integrates with visuals and narrative flow, providing real-world experience in creating cohesive, multisensory stories. We love to encourage students to collaborate with other creators, as so much of the entertainment industry has overlap.
For example, a Recording Arts student might work with a Digital Film student to enhance an action sequence with realistic sound effects, or to add a sound cue to a dramatic exposition scene. Or they may team up with Animation and Visual Effects students to create soundscapes for a fantasy animation. Each collaboration teaches students not only the technicalities of audio production but also the art of communicating and blending creative ideas to enhance a shared story.
