Instructor, Josh Franklin’s JZ Vintage Microphone Review

by | Aug 3, 2023

MediaTech Institute in Dallas recently picked up a V12, a V47 and a V67. I want to start with a quick “WOW”. These mics are no joke! Well constructed and VERY well modeled after their vintage counterparts! Since picking them up, I’ve had multiple opportunities to test them out on vocals and acoustic guitars.

V12: I absolutely LOVE the top end on this microphone, the clarity and presence are incredible while not being harsh or offensive in any way (which is the problem I find with so many modern condenser mics). On acoustic guitar, this is easily one of my favorite mics I’ve ever heard! Change the mic position around just a little bit and you can focus on any sort of tone you’re going for. For vocals, I’ve found that it sounds fantastic on lower-toned vocalists, adding some air and plenty of the clarity that we all love…  before even touching an EQ!

V47: VERY balanced mic; the mids are more prominent in this mic than in the V12 or the V67. I noticed this mic responds VERY well to subtle EQ moves. I like to think of this mic as being very realistic and usable on virtually any source. A true reliable workhorse that can be reached for in any scenario!

V67: Sounds so good as soon as you hit the record button. I detect some sort of gentle scoop out of the mids/upper mids, and it immediately tames some of the harshnesses we have in modern recordings and modern mics. This mic also responds VERY well to EQ. I absolutely love this microphone for vocals, particularly female vocalists!

*I have a current mix where I’ve got a male lead vocal on the V12 and a female lead vocal on the V67. They’re complementing each other in such a cool way! Thanks for making great vintage model mics, JZ!

Check out the pics below from when we were testing out the mics.
