TJ started playing guitar and bass in his early teen years which led him to recording demos on old Tascam 4 & 8-Track recorders. In high school, his band saved up some money and went into areal studio to cut a demo and that’s when the studio fever started. Why didn’t their demo sound like their favorite records? What does every button, knob, and fader do on a real console? What weird noise does each effects processor make? After high school TJ spent years following these questions by interning and assisting at various demo studio around Dallas. After a while he started recording his own and other bands.
After interning and assisting at Maximedia Production Group in 2001-2002 in Dallas (now the MediaTech Dallas Campus), TJ attended the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences in Tempe, AZ. While at school, he fell in love with Foley Sound, Sound Design, & the whole Post-Production process. This led to an internship at Reel FX Creative Studios in Dallas. After the internship, TJ was hired at Fast Cuts, a boutique commercial editorial house, as an Assistant Audio Engineer.
After a year at Fast Cuts, TJ took a position as a Sound Designer / Mixer at Reel FX Creative Studios. He spent 12 years there working on Animated Feature Films (Free Birds, Book of Life, Rock Dog), Independent and Short Films, National TV and Radio Commercials, Direct-To-DVD releases, Interactive Projects and Virtual Reality Experiences.
In 2017, he launched TJ Callaway Audio, Inc. ( www.tjcallawayaudio.com ) and joined MediaTech Dallas as a Post-Production Instructor to share his love of sound for Film and TV with MediaTech’s students.
